Full stack interns are expected to move between frontend (usually React) and backend (a language like Python, Node.js, or Java) work on the same project, rather than staying in one lane — smaller companies and startups post full stack roles more often than large tech companies, which tend to split the two.

Neither is strictly better — full stack breadth is valuable at startups where you'll touch the whole product, while specializing can help you stand out for larger companies with dedicated frontend/backend tracks. Many students do a full stack internship first, then specialize later.
